IELTS - International English Language Testing System.

This is an exam which is conducted in order to test the english proficiency of the students as well as migrants to english speaking countries in order to ensure that they do not suffer due to lack of knowledge in the language and this is also considered as an entry criteria for many universities for their admission, which is based on the score.

This is accepted widely by various countries such as USA, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

They require a minimum band score starting from 5.5 upto 9 which is the max.

There are four main sections in the IELTS exam. They are: 1. Listening Section 2. Reading Section 3. Writing Part and 4. Speaking Test.


1. Listening Section:


This section comprises of 40 questions approx. And this is subdivided into 3 parts. Under each there can be various types of questions such as choose, fill ups, yes or no type etc... And this has a individual band score marked out of 9. In this section an audio recording will be played in the headphones and you must answer based upon the conversation or any audio that is played. An easier method to solve is that we can write the answers as and when we come across it while the audio is played and time will be given to transfer that to the answer sheets. Most importantly we must concentrate and pay attention to the spellings too. And the audio will be played only once.


2. Reading Section:


In the reading section there will be three passages given in the question booklet. And the level of difficulty increases as the passage no. increases. The main aim of this section is to test the ability of the student to comprehend the given passage and answer to the relevant qestions asked. And this is the most difficult section of IELTS. The easier method to get through is that we should get deep into the meaning and the complete context of the passage instead we need to read fast and get to know the content of the passage and then we can get to the right lines where the answer lies. Dont take more time to read but spend more in analysing the questions and getting the right answers. This has a band score marked out of 9.

3. Writing Section:

In this section we will have to write two essays. The first one will be of minimum 150 words and for this a picture or a pie chart or statistic representation or any data will be given and the essay must be oriented with that which must answer to the point. Allot mimmum time for it. The second one is the essay that must be of minimum 250 words. And for this any general topics are given as the essay topic. And again the essay must be to the point and for this more of general knowledge is required. This has a band score marked out of 9.

4. Speaking Section:

This section is a personal interview round where the candidates will be sent into the examination private rooms which have pre-occupied examiners. In this section the first question can be anything general such as introduce yourself or tell us about your family etc.. And before that the will get your permission to record the conversation in a recorder. Then the next question will be, they will give you a general topic and give you a miniute to prepare along with a paper and pencil to write down points. Then you have to speak minimum for a miniute. And the important point is that there must not be repetition of points. The next part is that,they will raise questiond based upon the answer which you have given for the topic. Do not worry whether the content is right but if you do not repeat points and speak without any stammers, the round is yours. This has a band score marked out of 9.


Time Allotment:

Listening section - 1/2 an Hour.

Reading section - 1 Hour.

Writing Section - 1 hour.

Speaking Section - 11 to 20 mins.

Listening, Reading and Writing Section will be on the same day and will be conducted continuously and without a break and the speaking can be on the same day or the next day.

Each band will be individually marked out of 9 and then their average is taken as the overall band score.

To Register:

Two bodies are authorized by their corresponding governments for conducting this examination. They are: 1. British Council and 2. IDP Australia. We can register by submitting the application in their corresponding offices where as well applications can be obtained. After registering the materials is given by them for preparation.

Minimum of one full month preparation is required to get 6.5 band score. Its better to prepare with both the materials of British Council and IDP even when you be registering with one body only.

You must register atleast 14 days prior to the examination date and the result will be obtained 13 days after the exam date.

The fees is Rs. 7400 approx. And the coaching centers proving to be good are Princeton Review and Datamatics.
